MSE Curriculum, for Class Starting Fall 2017

The MS&E program is a three-semester program which can be completed in a single calendar year. Students enter in the Fall term and can either finish their coursework at the end of the following August, or alternatively, have the option to take the Summer term off (e.g. for an internship) and complete their coursework by the end of the following Fall term. Students are required to take the equivalent of 12 three-credit courses (36 credits).

Students must take at least 6 courses within the IEOR Department (18 credits), 3 to 6 courses at the Business School, and the remaining courses (if any) within the School of Engineering, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Law School, or the Departments of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics. Students in residence during the Summer term take 2 to 4 Business School courses in the third (Summer) semester in order to complete their program. To facilitate with academic programming, students should complete a program plan to be reviewed by their advisor.

The Department requires that students achieve grades of B- or higher in each of the three fundamental core courses. Poor performance in these courses is indicative of inadequate preparation and is very likely to lead to serious problems in completing the program. As a result, students failing to meet this criterion may be asked to withdraw from the program.

Courses with a FINC, DROM or MGMT designation are Business School courses. Courses with IEOR, IEME, CSOR designations are IEOR department courses. The curriculum for the class starting Fall 2017 is presented below. (The curriculum for the Fall 2016 Class)

Breadth Electives (6 points total):
The breadth electives can be selected from the Business School, the School of Engineering, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Law School, or the Departments of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics.

Electives are selected under the advisement of the student's faculty advisor. Courses taken from the School of Professional Studies will not be counted towards the M.S. degree (i.e. courses with the following prefixes: ACTU, BUSI, COPR, IKNS, SUMA, FUND, and more).

All Business school courses listed above are open to MS&E students. MS&E students will enjoy some priority for other business school courses as described below:
When courses are under-subscribed by Business School students during pre-registration, the courses are normally eligible for cross-registration by students in other schools. MS&E students will receive priority to register for these courses prior to their being made available to students in other programs and Schools. If more MS&E students wish to enroll in a course than there are seats available, the IEOR department will make the decision on the students who will get the spaces (e.g. based on a lottery or GPA). Only if additional space is available after MS&E students have signed up, then these courses will be made available to other cross-registration students at the University. When courses are subscribed close to capacity during pre-registration, available seats will be open to all students on a first come/first served basis after the first class.
